Located to the north of Kathmandu valley, the Langtang valley is home to the Tamang and Sherpa communities, whose unique traditions and lifestyles provide a fascinating cultural experience. This wonderful Langtang Gosainkunda Lake Trek combines the remote and spectacular Langtang valley with the high alpine lakes of Gosainkunda.
This lake has a high importance for both the Hindus and the Buddhists, and is one of the most significant and prominent lakes in this region. During the Janai Purnima festival, thousands of pilgrims from Nepal and India visit this lake to take a bath in the holy water. Surrounded by rugged mountains, the lake is believed to have been created by Lord Shiva and holds immense religious significance.
The Langtang Gosainkunda Lake trek is a captivating journey that starts at Syabrubesi on the edge of the Langtang National Park. The hike is over a well-established path through lush forests past several small villages and through stunning landscape. As you ascend, the landscape changes dramatically, offering stunning views of snow-capped peaks, including Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, and Dorje Lakpa.
The Langtang Gosainkunda Lake Trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, and then to Sherpagoan past the village of Khanjim. We have begun our Langtang Gosainkunda Trek from Shepagoan. From Sherpagoan, you will descend to Rimche and join the main trail coming from Bamboo.
The trail traverses diverse terrain inside the Langtang National Park, winding through verdant forests, picturesque alpine meadows, and passing by small settlements, meadows and yak herder’s camps along the Langtang river en-route to Kyanjin Gompa. From Kyanjin Gompa, you will embark on a hike to the vantage point of Tserko Ri (4950 m.
The hike to Tserko Ri is more difficult and time consuming but the view is absolutely astounding. The whole Langtang valley opens up before you with the surrounding mountain peaks up close. After enjoying the incredible moment, you will retrace back to Kyanjin Gompa. The return journey follows the same route that you had taken earlier past Langtang, Thangsyap, Ghoda Tabela, Lama Hotel and Rimche.
From Rimche, you take a different route than earlier and descend to Bamboo, and Pairo. On the way from Pairo, you will come against a juncture, instead of continuing towards Domen and Syabrubesi, you will take the left that will take you to the village of Thulo Syabru and continue on towards the holy lake of Gosainkunda, passing through the mesmerizing break of Lauribina Pass (4610m).
Nestled among the snowy peaks, encircled by lush meadows and subalpine woodlands, Gosainkunda Lake is regarded as a sacred pilgrimage site by both Hindus and Buddhists alike. It is believed that the waters of Gosaikunda Lakes possess magical healing powers and attract thousands of Hindu devotees for an annual bath in the lake during the Janai Purnima festival.
