It is surrounded on the east by Tuiral River, on the north by the Durtlang hills and on the west by the Tlawng River. As per the 2001 Census (Provisional), the population of Aizawl is 2,29,714. The town is a political, cultural and religious centre of the Mizos. The majority of people living in Aizawl are Christians and for that matter Sunday is an important day for them. Roads and shopping areas wear an empty look on this day and the only sound that one could hear are the chimes of the church bells in the morning and evening.
