All the indispensable treats of solitude can be savored on the journey to Fatehpur Sikri. The uncanny experience of walking around this ghost town, arches of sandstone, empty courtyards and buildings and the presence of royal medieval legacy makes Fatehpur Sikri an amazing destination for any traveler. Fatehpur Sikri is situated at a distance of 37 km to the west of Agra. It was built in 1571 by Emperor Akbar in honor of Sufi Saint Salim Chisti. History has it that this abandoned city was inhabited for 14 years and then completely deserted for reasons very vague. There is a Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Ankh Michali, Jama Masjid, Parcheesi Court, Diwan-i-Am and Abdar Khana among others. While the architecture is influenced by a style that seems Persian, you can see both Hindu and Jain influences in some of the structures. There are some carvings of Hindu deities in some structures. A beautiful red sandstone built gateway leads to the tomb of Salim Chisti, flocked by pilgrims from far and wide. Decorative screens adorn the Dargah (tomb) which is itself made out of white marble. This place is the perfect experience of all things Persian in spirit, with a great variety of proportion in all structures within it and its idyllic ambience through its design and purpose.
