Kopan Monastery || A Buddhist Research Centre
Perched on a hill on the fringes of Kathmandu overlooking the Kathmandu valley is the Kopan monastery. It is a member of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition, an international network of Gelugpa dharma centers. It was established by the FPMT's founders, Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche. As it is situated on a hillside the monastery provides panoramic view of the Kathmandu valley and the surrounding hills.
Kopan has become famous for teaching Buddhism to visiting Western foreigners. Visitors may choose to explore the picturesque and tranquil monastery for a few hours, do a retreat or join one of the courses to learn more about Buddhist Philosophy and Psychology. Courses may vary from a week to months. The monastery campus is open to all and everyone is welcome to witness the tranquility even if it is for an hour.
