Langtang National Park lies about 32kms to the north of Kathmandu valley. The park stretches to an area of 1,710 sq. km and extends over parts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Sindhupalchowk districts to the border of Tibet. The Langtang National Park is the nearest Himalayan Park from capital city Kathmandu; it is the third most popular trekking destination after Sagarmatha and Annapurna regions. The park offers numerous trekking routes mainly the Langtang valley, Helambu and the Gosaikunda lakes. Langtang National Park is one of the most accessible trekking regions near the Kathmandu Valley if you are short on time but still want to trek the Himalayas and experience the wonderful Himalayan culture of the people living there. The Langtang area is best known for its pristine forests, high-elevation meadows and lovely mountain views. The Langtang region has diverse landscape with varied flora and fauna, the deep gorges of Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola are thickly forested with rhododendron, oak, maple and alder. The animals common to this area are wild boar, Himalayan black bear, ghoral, Himalayan thar, musk deer, grey langur monkey, clouded leopard and snow leopard. The park is also the home to different species of birds like Impeyan pheasant, Tragopan and kalij pheasants to name some. There are several ways to reach Langtang National Park. The most common is to drive to Dhunche which is about 5-8hrs drive depending on the road condition. The upper reaches of Langtang can be covered in four to five days of easy hiking. However, taking a days' rest for acclimatization is recommended.
