Trek Jangothang - Lingshi
Approximately: distance 18km, 6-7hours trek. 840m ascent and 870m descend.
Those who face altitude issues, it is a good idea to retrace back to Paro from Jangothang Base camp.
From the campsite, climb steeply up with the views of Jichu Drake, Jumolhari and the adjoining peaks and head into a glacial valley with many moraines. Trees have been left far below; there are few small gentians, but otherwise it is just grass, tundra and small juniper bushes. You may be able to spot blue sheep on the hill sides and see some fat mountain marmots. As we near the ridge we can see the snowy peak of Tserim Kang (22,268'). After about 4 hours trek from Jangothang, arrive at Nyile La pass (15,970'/4870m). Nyile La. (GPS:27° 48.518' 89° 23.268'). From here the views of Chomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tserim Kang are spectacular. Descend along scree slopes to a side valley at 14,596', traverse a hillside, then descend on switchbacks to another side valley covered with dwarf rhododendron and views of Jichu Darke and Tsherim Kang towering to the north. Little fort of Lingshi lies to the north, atop a ridge with the commanding view of the valley and the scattered villages. If you have a spare day, Lingshi is worth stopping to take a rest for the following strenuous day. During the halt here, you can make excursion to the lake near the base of Mt. Jichu Drake and en-route, you will probably encounter blue sheep and musk deer. Camp at Chashi Thang, near a stone shelter is built for the trekkers at an altitude of 4010m.
